Abstract
How do ageing and footwear relate to the structure and mechanical behaviour of the heel fat pad, and to the way we walk? Drawing on a large dataset that I co-collected from the UK and India, I present in this talk findings on heel-pad morphology, soft-tissue biomechanics and gait. It brings laboratory and field measurements together to explore variation within and across participant populations and study settings, connecting local tissue biomechanical behaviour under varied static and dynamic conditions. The presentation discusses the findings alongside the methods used to obtain them, opening a conversation about their interpretation and the relationships between ageing, footwear and population context.
