Abstract
Robots need measurements of their own state and the world around them before they can act effectively. This guest lecture introduces the main families of robotic sensors and actuators, connecting the physical quantities they measure or control with their role in a robotic system. It then considers the uncertainty that accompanies sensor readings, why combining measurements can be useful, and how Bayesian reasoning supports decisions under uncertainty. Alongside these technical foundations, the lecture introduces legal and ethical questions that arise when robots operate around people.
